TRAVEL AIR NC4179

NC4179 was a Model 2000 manufactured March 21, 1918 by the Travel Air Manufacturing Company, Wichita, KS. It was assigned S/N 351. It left the factory with a Curtiss OX-5 90HP engine, S/N 4994. It was a three-place airplane that weighed 2,180 pounds.

NC4179 landed twice at Santa Monica. The first visit was on Friday, April 19, 1929 at 8:00AM. The pilot was David G. Johns. He arrived from Long Beach, CA carrying one, unidentified passenger. The owner of NC4179 was identified as "Crawford School." Johns flew with Transport pilot certificate T5137.

The second visit was on Wednesday, July 1, 1931 at 12:30PM. The pilot this time was T.J. Chester "Tex" Phillips. He also carried a single, unidentified passenger. They arrived at Santa Monica from Mines Field, and identified their destination as Monrovia, CA. Phillips carried Transport certificate T1280. Phillips identified the owner of the airplane as "Phillips," but in this case it was Phillips Petroleum Company and not him personally.

NC4179 also landed fifteen times at the Grand Central Air Terminal (GCAT) during April and May, 1931, owned by Phillips Petroleum. Full information is at its Web page over at GCAT at the link.
